![]() When you hear speech, your brain will process it “top-down” ( that’s a term used by a 2006 study into this). ![]() In exactly the same manner Ben’s act is not revealing the words being sung, but instead he is priming you and that is why his illusion works. ![]() You know that those supposedly secret satanic messages are not really there. When you are then primed and told what the message is, then, and only then, can you hear it. What is fascinating about that is that if you simply hear the sound without being primed then you do not hear the “secret” message. You might perhaps be old enough to recall the fad that involved playing songs backwards to reveal supposed secret satanic messages. What is being leveraged here is your brain’s intense preference for meaningful language. Over vast tracts of time and an almost countless number of generations your brain has been selected to value language over and above other sounds. You have been naturally selected for language. So what is going on here, how is it possible for you to actually hear things that you also know are not actually there at all? This was a very entertaining example of an audio illusion being triggered by what is known as priming. His act consisted of playing various very well-known songs, but he primed you to hear something distinctly different by holding up a series of signs. Pictured above is Ben Langley on Britains Got Talent last weekend. First, let’s talk about audio illusions in general. They also plan to investigate visual disappearances and other examples of things people can perceive as being absent.I’m building up to an explanation for the “Yanni or Laurel” audio illusion. The researchers plan to keep exploring the extent to which people hear silence, including whether we hear silences that are not preceded by sound. The findings establish a new way to study the perception of absence, the team said. "The kinds of illusions and effects that look like they are unique to the auditory processing of a sound, we also get them with silences, suggesting we really do hear absences of sound too." "There's at least one thing that we hear that isn't a sound, and that's the silence that happens when sounds go away," said co-author Ian Phillips, a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Psychological and Brain Sciences. It was that the same illusions that scientists thought could only be triggered with sounds worked just as well when the sounds were replaced by silences. The idea wasn't simply that these silences made people experience illusions, the researchers said. They then listened for periods within those audio tracks when all sound stopped abruptly, creating brief silences. Participants were asked to listen to soundscapes that simulated the din of busy restaurants, markets, and train stations. If you can get the same illusions with silences as you get with sounds, then that may be evidence that we literally hear silence after all." "Our approach was to ask whether our brains treat silences the way they treat sounds. "Philosophers have long debated whether silence is something we can literally perceive, but there hasn't been a scientific study aimed directly at this question," said Chaz Firestone, an assistant professor of psychological and brain sciences who directs the Johns Hopkins Perception & Mind Laboratory. ![]() The fact that these silence-based illusions produced exactly the same results as their sound-based counterparts suggests that people hear silence just as they hear sounds, the researchers said. In the team's new silence-based illusion, an equivalent moment of silence also seemed longer than it really was. For example, one illusion made a sound seem much longer than it really was. The team adapted well-known auditory illusions to create versions in which the sounds of the original illusions were replaced by moments of silence. Video credit: Roy Henry/Johns Hopkins University

If we use our example again and assume that the Basha is now lvl2 and has the “More Tellyportas” upgrade (+1 to assault actions of Lightning Strikes) the combined chances of a successful Lightning Strike against the Dauntless would be as follows: The combined chance to succeed cannot be seen in game, you will have to calculate it for yourself. Both would have the same chance to succeed (as shown in “Chances of critical damage”), but the outcome would be calculated individually. A Lightning Strike with improved assault actions would teleport two teams instead of one. This is called “assault actions” and can be seen as the number of teams the attacker sends onto the enemy ship. The imperial captain instead will read “Chances of critical damage: 30%” when trying the same.įor the attacker there is another way to improve the effectiveness of his boarding operations: the number of attacks. Now back to the example with the lvl1 Dauntless vs lvl1 Basha: If the ork kaptin tries a Lightning Strike against his opponent he will notice “Chances of critical damage: 40%”. This means 60/70/50% chance to fail the boarding and 40/30/50% chance for the attacker to succeed. The basic TV in the game is 60 for human (Imperium or Chaos) ships, 70 for the orks and 50 for the eldar. ![]() Only the defending ship can influence the chance to fail the boarding (and so the chance to succeed for the attacker) by raising its TV. The TV of the attacking ship has NOTHING to do with the boarding operation. The chance to fail is equal to the so called “Troop Value” (TV) of the defender which can be taken from the ship’s stats. This information is just a tool of convenience for the attacker, because only its opposite, the chance to fail the boarding, can be influenced (and is used by the game). The chance of success is misleadingly labelled “Chances of critical damage”. Whether a boarding operation is successful or not is random. Since escort-class vessels and transports have no subsystems, there will always be a fire or a hull breach when they are boarded successfully. Fires can stack with each other and deal tremendous amounts of damage if the victim is not able to use emergency repairs. ![]() Fire: 2 points of damage per second for 45 seconds.(More detailed explaination: If a subsystem is prioritised, the random test that determines the target is repeated once, should the first test not give the desired result. It is random which subsystem is affected, but you can raise the chance by prioritising one of them. Subsystem destroyed: Deck, generator, engines or one weapon is destroyed. If it is a success, it will have the same effect as a critical hit by a weapon (without the weapons damage) and initiate the cooldown of the boarding skills. If it is a failure, you will get a message and the boarding skills will be on cooldown (90 seconds, in most cases), but there will be no other penalties. What can happen now?Ī boarding operation can only be a success or a failure, there is nothing in between. ![]() The armsmen are teleported to the orkish heap of space junk and try to do their work. Now we assume that the Dauntless has already broken through the shields of the enemy and the imperial captain orders a Lightning Strike. Both should be Level 1, so they have neither crew nor ship upgrades. Let’s have a look at a simple battle situation: An imperial light cruiser, Dauntless class, against an ork light cruiser, Basha class. This is called a “Lightning Strike” and every line ship (not the small escort-class ships) is equipped for it. There are several ways to do so, for example by teleportation. In 2016, in a lot of cases, they were reversed. “The open question that won’t be answered until : Do those early vote trends carry on through Election Day?” Bonier asked. But even this does not guarantee electoral success for Democrats on Tuesday. Mara Suttmann, a professor of government at Connecticut College, noted that it’s hard to predict which party will benefit from early voting because many voters would have voted whether or not early voting was an option - “cannibalizing” the Election Day vote instead of adding many new voters to the electorate.īonier noted that there has been in a surge in non-usual voters, including young people and people voting for the first time, which could favor Democrats. Higher-than-expected turnout helped Democrats in some but not all of the Times/Siena polling models. (Another 7 percent of the district’s population is in another county that has not published early vote totals by congressional seat.) Over 188,000 voters have cast early ballots in the Dallas County portion of the battleground district, according to county data. Pete Sessions’ (R-Texas) contested reelection race, for example, projected that about 194,000 people would turn out, while the second poll projected 211,000 voters would cast ballots in that slice of the Dallas suburbs. And the baseline estimates have gone up in recent weeks: The first Times/Siena poll of Rep. Some pollsters, like Monmouth University and The New York Times/Siena College, have adjusted this year by publishing multiple results for each poll, detailing how the results would change under different turnout scenarios. “I think we’ve all made a very safe assumption that 2018 will look nothing like 2014,” Bonier said, noting that underestimating certain demographics by even a few percentage points in a poll could have outsize effects on the results. That’s up from 2014, an unusually low-turnout year in which fewer than 82 million people voted for the highest office on their ballot, but still lower than 2016, when about 137 million people voted for president. McDonald and the team at Edison Media Research, which is conducting a revamped exit poll this election after stumbling in 2016, predict that 105.5 million people will vote this year - about 45 percent of the voting eligible population. ![]() But they did note that pre-election polls make built-in assumptions about how many people will vote, and pollsters who leaned too heavily on past midterm turnout may have misfired. Tom Bonier, CEO of the Democratic data firm TargetSmart, projected that early voting could surpass 40 million when all the ballots are received.Īnalysts cautioned against drawing broad conclusions about which party could gain an advantage from the high early-vote totals. McDonald predicted that by the time all the early votes are compiled, every state could surpass its 2014 totals. ![]() “The best guess is that we’re looking at some sort of hybrid midterm/presidential election” in terms of turnout. “This is not a normal election,” McDonald told POLITICO. The high voting rates have transformed expectations about who will show up in the midterms - and they could inspire results that diverge from any pre-election polls that did not reckon with this year’s unusually high enthusiasm. Early voters in three states - Texas, Nevada and Arizona - have surpassed total turnout in the most recent midterm election, McDonald’s data show, and more states will blow past their normal non-presidential turnout with just a handful more votes on Election Day. And that trend was expected to extend into Election Day. |
